European Union hits the little guys

As long feared by European travellers, Ryanair is being targeted by the EU. Publicly owned small regional airports in backward areas will be the ones to suffer. As all our readers will know, Ryanair lost the case of subsidies for flying into Charleroi, Belgium, regardless of the fact that it had helped the very poor area of Belgium to show a growth in its tourist market and hotel trade. This ridiculous situation is typical of EU legislation. Governments have long supported non-profitable airlines throughout most of Europe. This is true of British Airways, Air France and Sabena to say nothing of the Swiss. One only has to look at the car park at Girona airport to note the massive increase of traffic brought to the area by Ryanair to appreciate the effect that the cheap airlines can have on a region. The EU should be supporting this movement of its members, not putting problems in the way.
